Cities with Forking Paths? Agglomeration Economies in New Zealand 1976-2018

چکیده

We consider whether external urban economic advantages (agglomeration economies) vary with time and space using a simple model detailed micro-data on 134 locations in New Zealand for the period 1976–2018. find subtle temporal variation, estimates peaking 1991 then falling over next 15-years by approximately 1%. Since 2006, however, have remained broadly stable. Our results reveal more significant spatial variation: Large cities offer net benefits production, but not consumption, whereas small close to large (“satellites”) experience agglomeration economies that are stronger than average.

Knowledge Externalities , Agglomeration Economies , and Employment Growth in Dutch Cities

This paper extends the work of Glaeser et al. (1992) by looking at effects of agglomeration economies on employment growth in Dutch city-industries and in very small (postal) zip code-industries in the Dutch province of South-Holland. At both levels of geographic detail, findings are broadly consistent with results from the earlier study in that employment growth is enhanced by industrial diver...

Location Strategies for Agglomeration Economies

Geographically concentrated industry activity creates pools of skilled labor and specialized suppliers, and increases opportunities for knowledge spillovers. The strategic value of these agglomeration economies may vary by firm, depending upon the relative value of each economy, and upon firm and agglomeration economy traits. To better determine when a firm will be attracted to agglomeration ec...

Agglomeration and networks in spatial economies

We consider the parallel developments in the economics of agglomeration and the economics of networks. We explore the complementarities between the productivity benefits of agglomeration and those of network linkages, arguing that networks of actors dispersed over space may substitute for agglomerations of actors at a single point. Causality Between the Measured and Underground Economies in New Zealand

We investigate some characteristics of the underground economy in New Zealand by testing for Granger causality between measured and "hidden" real GDP in that country. We find clear evidence of causality from measured to hidden economic activity, but only weak evidence of causality in the reverse direction. This poses a dilemma for policy-makers who wish to stimulate economic growth and also min...
